The Weesperbuurt in Amsterdam-Centrum encompasses the easternmost portion of Amsterdam canals, located between Binnenamstel, Plantagebuurt and Singelgracht. The neighborhood is bisected by three canals running east from Amstel: Herengracht, Keizersgracht Prinsengracht and Achtergracht as well as by Weesperstraat with Weesperplein and Roetersstraat as well as part of Sarphatistraat that also lies within its boundaries.
Roeterseiland refers to the University of Amsterdam buildings located around Roetersstraat and Nieuwe Achtergracht in Amsterdam, historically part of Weesperbuurt until World War II when many residents were deported and murdered; after which, some buildings were demolished to widen Weesperstraat; other than these demolitions some structures such as Diamond Exchange buildings as well as Jewish institutions such as Invalid were repurposed; while Weesperstaete was built at Weesperplein as office building Weesperstaete was constructed at Weesperplein.
Culture is an integral component of Weesperbuurt. Since 1887, theater Carre has occupied its home on the Amstel, while cinema Kriterion (1945) can be found on Roetersstraat. Additionally, since 2009 the Hermitage Amsterdam museum has resided within its monumental Amstelhof building while Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten has made Sarphatistraat its base.
Transportation-wise, Weesperstraat forms part of Amsterdam city route S112 (Mr. Visserplein - Jonas Daniel Meijerplein - Weesperstraat - Weesperplein - Wibautstraat). Metro stop Weesperplein, part of Oostlijn metro line 51 & 53 is served by Weesperplein; above ground there are tram stops serving lines 1, 7, 19 on Sarphatistraat.
