Situated in Amsterdam West, Sloterdijk is a neighbourhood which is easily accessible, has a dynamic nature, and has a lot to offer locals and visitors. The neighbourhood is often overlooked in recommended places to visit in Amsterdam, however, perhaps because its most well-known feature is the Sloterdijk train station, an important hub for train, tram, and local and international bus transfers. What many Sloterdijk visitors may not realise is that the area offers a lot more than accessibility and accommodation. This article includes top Sloterdijk bars and restaurants, things to do, and points of interest near Sloterdijk station. It reveals the trendy, sociable side of Sloterdijk, and shows that there are plenty of reasons for staying near Sloterdijk station!

Staying near Amsterdam Sloterdijk station: Holiday Inn Express Sloterdijk and more

The Sloterdijk station has many hotels nearby, a good option for travellers who would prefer not to stay in Amsterdam’s city centre. For example, the Holiday Inn Express Amsterdam Sloterdijk hotel is directly beside the Sloterdijk station, and it is possible to park your car in its Sloterdijk parking, even if you are not a hotel guest. The Meininger Hotel Amsterdam City West, Hotel ibis Amsterdam City West, and Hotel2stay are similar options in terms of proximity and pricing.

For a more unique Amsterdam hotel experience, we would highly recommend the Urban Lodge Hotel, a hotel for ‘urban cowboys’ which combines country and urban designs in its decor. Backpackers should opt for the Train lodge hostel. This hostel close to Sloterdijk station has preserved original train compartments and transformed them into cozy rooms, as the name suggests. You can choose from several booking options, from single compartments to entire carriages! It is the ideal Amsterdam Sloterdijk hostel for backpacker groups.

Staying near Amsterdam Sloterdijk station: Bars and Restaurants

There are a number of homey Sloterdijk bars and restaurants that you can visit around the area. We have selected 5 of our favourites to help narrow down the choice (showcased in no particular order).

BRET

Sloterdijk bar

Our top pick of the Sloterdijk bars is BRET bar. Situated on the Orlyplein right outside the Sloterdijk station, the bright red shipping container-like Bret building is unmistakable and unmissable. Its rustic design and feel are apparent as you walk up its stone path, past the romantic vision of a rusty car in the Bret yard. Inside, this Sloterdijk bar is bustling with chatter amplified by the high ceilings decorated with plants and, overlooking everything, a giant disco ball.

This Sloterdijk bar has a wide range of drinks to choose from and a borrel (Dutch snacks to be eaten with drinks) and burger-style menu. The Bret staff take beers seriously, with the menu encouraging you to ask the waiters for suggestions for having ‘the right beer with your meal’.

As if this Sloterdijk bar wasn’t already fantastic enough, the Bret bar also frequently hosts events and parties and is responsible for the Bret Garden, a collective of creatives who are focused on a sustainable economy. You can read more about the Bret Garden or ‘Tuin van Bret’ a bit further along in this article.

Because of Corona, BRET is temporarily only open for collecting a BRETPAKKET: a personal selection of beers that you can pick up on Friday and Saturday.

Grand Café Hermes

Located right in front of the Sloterdijk station, Grand Café Hermes is convenient, easy-going and a perfect place to meet up for a drink or a meal after work with colleagues or friends. This Sloterdijk station bar and restaurant has a large, open terrace, ideal for having a drink on a long Summer day. Though they have a few delicious vegetarian options, the menu is primarily focused on meat and fish. This Sloterdijk restaurant uses meat and fish which are locally produced in North Holland and which has been caught in the North Sea.

Grand Café Hermes also rents out its spaces for parties and events, making this Sloterdijk bar and restaurant accessible in a whole new way. It remains a real worker’s watering hole, as it is closed for the weekends (open for private events). What better way to wind down the day than to have a drink at this Sloterdijk station bar?

Unfortunately, the Grand Café Hermes is currently closed due to the Corona measures.

Wissenkerke-Sloterdijk

If you’re a real borrel and beer lover, then this is the Sloterdijk bar for you. Wissenkerke-Sloterdijk is just 300m from the Sloterdijk station, and promises its guests a ‘gezellig’ (meaning ‘cosy’, ‘nice’ and ‘warm’ all together) experience. The lunch and dinner menus are straightforward and approachable, offering classic burgers, sandwiches, soups, and salads.

The Wissenkerke-Sloterdijk is ideal for a borrel. In fact, this buzzing Sloterdijk bar and restaurant has an entire dedicated borrel menu! The Borrel platters feature classic Dutch snacks such as kroketten and nut mixes, and offers different deals. For example, there are ‘Borrel arrangements’ for 10 or more people, or an all-you-can-eat borrel option. This Sloterdijk bar is ideal for groups of all sizes and is a highly recommended place to visit in the Sloterdijk station area.

At the moment the Wissenkerke-Sloterdijk bar and café are unfortunately closed due to the Corona measures.

Troost (Westergas)

Troost

If you enjoy taking walks along long, leafy paths, then visit the Troost brewery in Westerpark. It is an 8 minute cycle or a half an hour walk from the Sloterdijk station, and is one of the best bars in the Sloterdijk area. The beers brewed at Troost come in a range of flavours, from darker beers to IPAs and blonde beers. If you prefer lighter beers with a slightly sweeter flavour, we highly recommend the honingblond, a beer brewed with real honey and which has a bright, fresh flavour. The industrial, rugged interior of Troost is emphasised by the bare, unhidden brewing barrels that line the side of this Westerpark bar.

The food at Troost is also delicious, featuring a range of dishes which complement the beers perfectly. One of the best Troost dishes is ‘The Italian’, a Mediterranean inspired burger topped with a mouthwatering array of ingredients such as gorgonzola, black olives, pancetta, mushrooms and onion chutney.

Because of the Corona measures, the Troost brewery is closed until further notice.

TonTon Club (West)

Also located in the Westerpark is TonTon Club (West). This Sloterdijk area bar is a great option for visitors who love games. Ton Ton is a an arcade-bar featuring classic arcade games such as pinball, Dance Dance Revolution and arcade racing games. There is a great cocktail and drink selection, and the sounds of arcade games in the air creates a fun, unique atmosphere. At TonTon Club West, it’s always ‘all fun and games’. Don’t miss out on this fantastic bar in the Sloterdijk area!

Due to the Corona measures, the TonTon Club (West) has been closed. It is still possible to play at the Jan Evertsenstraat at TonTon Club 3.

The Westerpark not only contains Troost and Ton Ton Club, but also several other bars, restaurants and things to do. There is the quaint wine bar Wester Wijnfabriek, for example, or the Ketelhuis, a charming theatre featuring European films, documentaries and arthouse cinema. The Westerpark also features a small animal farm and is the home of the famous Milkshake festival in the Summertime. Visiting the Westerpark is definitely one of the most highly recommended things to do in the Sloterdijk area.

The Wester Wijnfabriek has been closed because of the Corona measures. The Ketelhuis is open.

Bret Garden (Tuin van Bret)
