Overnight street parking is not automatically free: the Altstadt tariff continues from 23:00 to 08:00, and other streets may have separate restrictions or resident conditions. Parking rules, permits and penalties in Munich

Read the road signs at the parking bay before leaving the vehicle. They show whether the space is paid, reserved for residents, limited to a maximum period or subject to a stopping ban. A digital ticket does not override a resident restriction, temporary suspension, loading rule or incorrect number-plate selection.

Parking without a valid ticket or exceeding the permitted time generally starts at a €20 penalty. Parking in a stopping ban, on a footway, in a second row or on a cycle lane can cost at least €55. Vehicles entering the zone generally need a valid green environmental sticker:

• Petrol cars normally need at least Euro 1 with a regulated catalytic converter.
• Diesel vehicles that meet the general green-sticker requirement still face the diesel restriction unless they are Euro 6/VI or otherwise exempt.
• Diesel vehicles in Euro 5/V and older categories are covered by the current restriction. The first stage began on 1 February 2023, the second on 1 October 2023 and the third on 1 April 2024, when the general exemptions previously shown for residents and delivery traffic ended.
• Other vehicle types, including electric vehicles, must comply with the applicable sticker and sign requirements.

The zone and diesel restrictions apply to foreign-registered vehicles as well as German vehicles. There is no separate advance registration for a foreign number plate, but the vehicle still needs the required green sticker. The Kreisverwaltungsreferat is responsible for environmental stickers and exemption permits, with applications and guidance available through the official Munich environmental-zone portal and BayernPortal.

There is no general day pass for the Munich environmental zone. Individual exemptions can be available for defined cases such as certain medical, care, shift-work, supply, repair and hardship situations. The application fee is normally €25, or €10 in hardship cases. Driving into the zone without the required compliance or exemption can result in a €100 fine plus fees and expenses, typically around €128.50 in total.
